I Painted!

What is it about children and picking obnoxiously bright paint colors? Creative as these little humans may be, I don’t see a rainbow kitchen ceiling in my future. Sorry, kid.

I will, however, agree to an accent wall in their bedroom. Remember the Very Berry (holy hot pink!)? Then, there was this fantastic turquoise that I completely blame on pregnancy brain for Squirrel 2. Somehow, it also managed to find its way on the interior side of the front door and became Squirrel 1’s favorite color.

Squirrel 1’s room was unmanageably cold, and naturally, she moved into Squirrel 2’s turquoise room. Squirrel 2 moved into the last bedroom; her favorite color was purple at the time. I was hopeful she’d pick something that would transition well as she grows older—something like a smoky purple. Have you seen the painters’ fan with oodles of color chips? That child honed in on Lavish Lavender. Every. Single. Time. Right now, she can’t choose a single favorite color because she loves all of them. You get one guess as to which child wants a rainbow ceiling in the kitchen.

Speaking of smoky purple, I used the Santa Cecelia granite in the kitchen as the inspiration for the family room. The Cherry Bordeaux cabinets highlight the dark wine colored flecks, as do the morning room curtains and leather furniture and fireplace rock in the family room. (Coordination-happy?) The wall with the fireplace was painted Triple Berry (top chip) and the other walls of the family room are the same color as the unfinished splotch (name TBD). These colors were pulled from the gray/lavenderish flecks in the granite. I might go a bit darker next time but regardless, the colors will need to coordinate with the kitchen. I located a rug that has similar colors and mimics the speckles, so I bought two to tie together the family room and morning-turned-dining room.

I’m thinking of painting the kitchen a light gray. Possibly even the backsplash. I’m just not feeling the tan tile and it seems to fight with the Santa Cecelia. The hubby thinks I’m nuts but he humors me. This is also the same guy who doesn’t see colors in hues, just massive color families. Someday, I might consider putting in gray glass tiles.

I still have many more rooms to paint but the latest endeavor was the first floor powder room. It came out a bit bluer than I intended but I love it. One of these days, I will put shelves in there.

So many ideas. Paint the bedroom doors gray? Paint the stair railing and steps?

  1. Hi, we have the Courtland Gate that we built in 2015 and are considering having our attic finished for extra space. Would you please post or send me pictures when you come into your home showing how it looks in the foyer upwards towards the second floor.

    Thanks,
    Amanda
